The Level Up Letter - Vol. 1 - Year End Review

Year End Review

THE LEVEL UP LETTER - Year End Review

Hi All!
Welcome to the very first Level Up Letter. It’s a collection of what we're musing on, experimenting with or have found through our personal lives, research, clients and the BBM community.

We’re kicking off the first letter with something special as we wrap up 2023 and start to plan for 2024. Before setting any new goals or resolutions for the year, we find it best to stop and think back on the previous year. It gives us a chance to reflect on everything that happened both good and bad and a chance to plan more “good” in the coming year. Below is the step-by-step guide and best practices for a Personal Year End Review.

As a little bonus, we’ve created a free template for you.

Feel free to forward along to anyone you think might find it interesting or benefit from any of the content if your heart desires.

Thanks for being with us on this journey.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

STEP 1: POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

This is essentially the Tim Ferriss Year in Review Method. It’s a great starting place for a quick, systematic way to look back on your year.

  • Calendar Review: Go through your calendar from the last year, looking at every week.

  • Positive/Negative Review - Write down any people, activities or commitments that triggered peak POSITIVE or NEGATIVE emotions in their respective columns.

  • Do an 80/20 analysis - What were the top 20% of things in the POSITIVE column? Do more of these! What were the worst 20% in the NEGATIVE column? Do far less or even better eliminate these for the coming year.

STEP 2: SEVEN QUESTIONS

Next we want to dive a little deeper and ask ourselves more personal reflection questions. We found this framework from Sahil Bloom a great way to uncover more of how we’ve grown, struggled or held ourselves back.

  1. What did I change my mind on this year?

  2. What created energy this year?

  3. What drained energy this year?

  4. Who were the boat anchors in my life? (people that drag you down)

  5. What did I not do because of fear?

  6. What were my greatest hits and worst misses?

  7. What did I learn this year?

STEP 3: START WITH THE END

Now that you’ve had time to digest your year you can start to look ahead. Imagine you’re doing this same process a year from now. What do you see yourself accomplishing? Who are you spending your time with? What does your life look like exactly a year from today?

For the BBM members, now is a good time to reread your Vivid Visions and decide where you want to be a year from now across the 5Fs.

  1. FRIENDS - Where are your relationships a year from now?

  2. FAMILY - What has changed or progressed in your family life?

  3. FAITH - What are you doing for your personal/spiritual/mental wellness?

  4. FITNESS - What does your health look like a year from now?

  5. FINANCES - Have you progressed your income/investments/savings?

Once you know where you want to be in a year, you can start to map out those quarterly goals.
