The Level Up Letter - Vol. 19 - It's MAGIC!

Exploring the physiological and psychological aspects of magic and how they can affect us in our day-to-day lives

THE LEVEL UP LETTER

⁣”I’M SITTING RIGHT HERE!!” a friend screamed out as we were sitting front row in the close-up magic room of the Magic Castle. We were watching the close-up magician of the year, Suzanne, perform and our minds were blown.

We were literally two feet from her. Items were disappearing. They were changing into other things. They were multiplying and it all, well, looked like magic.

For this week’s Level Up Letter, we wanted to explore the physiological and psychological aspects of magic and how they can affect us in our day-to-day lives.

We hope you enjoy!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

SELECTIVE ATTENTION

Selective attention is a cognitive process where an individual focuses on one particular stimulus or task while ignoring other stimuli or distractions. Magicians use it all the time in misdirection.

Our brains are wired for effectively processing relevant information in environments filled with potential distractions. It helps in filtering out unimportant data, allowing the brain to allocate its resources to what is considered most significant at the moment.

When we put our time and focus into something, we can lose sight of the other things happening around us. Too much time in your business and you start to lose sight of your friends, family or your own personal health. We have to be very aware of where our attention is going and remember to take a step back and evaluate the 30,000’ view.

BLIND SPOTS

The human eye is an incredible feat of evolution. However, it’s not perfect. Its anatomical makeup includes a blind spot and all of us have it. The nerves that transmit data to the optical nerve all come together at one point and this forms our blind spot.

Magicians use this to position themselves or objects in your blind spot so they can do something like remove your watch or make one card to into another.

Here’s a little test for you to see for yourself.

Cover your LEFT eye and stare at the cross with your RIGHT eye.

Now SLOWLY move towards the computer screen while still staring at the cross with your RIGHT eye.

At somewhere around 10-14 inches from the computer screen – the black circle will disappear and the area where the black circle was…will now be all white – this is your BLIND SPOT.

Now try the OTHER eye…but this time cover your RIGHT eye and look at the CIRCLE with your LEFT eye…..move closer and you will see that the CROSS now disappears!!

In our personal lives, we all have blind spots. In the physical sense, we miss things that are right in front of our face all the time. Details that go unnoticed or that we just get used to being there and stop recognizing.

In the cognitive sense, our blindness can be a result of inadequate intellectual capacity for understanding something or it can be a result of emotional, cultural or cognitive biases. When you start to hear phrases like, “we’ve always done it like this” or “I don’t believe in xx” you start to uncover people’s blind spots.

THE WORLD AROUND YOU IS MAGIC

Every day new things are happening that we once thought were impossible. Someone is looking at the way things are done and saying, that’s stupid, I want to do it like this. Nature is doing things it’s been doing for centuries that we’re just starting to figure out.

As you head off into the weekend we encourage you to take 10 minutes to view the world with a fresh perspective. We don’t care if you sit out in nature or in your own living room. Take the time to look around and notice the things you haven’t noticed before or the things you’ve completely forgotten about.

Let us know what you discover.
