The Level Up Letter - Vol. 24 - PERFECTION IS THE ENEMY
It'll never be "perfect" so just do it
THE LEVEL UP LETTER
Hi All!
Here is your weekly Level Up Letter!
This week we’re talking about perfection and how to prevent it from holding you back. Even though our writing might not be perfect, we hope you’re still inspired by it and willing to share it with others. Enjoy!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

A NETFLIX LESSON
“There’s no such thing as a good idea,” says Marc Randolph, the co-founder and founding CEO of Netflix. He saw so many people obsess over coming up with great ideas. Then not put them into action or watch them fail because they didn’t test them. He now believes every idea is bad….But they’re all starting points.
Marc wasn’t perfect with this either. In the beginning, he wanted to create the “perfect” test. He’d build fully comprehensive tests with custom photography, meticulous copywriting, and stress tests for the site that would take weeks and weeks to build. The test would fail, typically within hours and they had to start again.
They started to cut corners, get sloppier and sloppier with the testing and started doing 4-5 tests per day. They realized it didn’t matter. A good idea would shine through the testing and a “perfect” test wouldn’t fix a bad idea.
As we build up these ideas in our mind, thinking they have to be perfect, they get bigger and bigger. Harder and harder to pull off and as Marc says, “the ideas never collide with reality.”
If you have an idea right now, collide it with reality. Do it as fast and as cheaply as possible. At least you’ll know if it’s actually an idea worth pursuing and polishing.
DON’T WAIT FOR THE PERFECT PITCH
You can’t hit a grand slam until you load all the bases. Singles still account for far more hits in baseball than home runs. Home run hitters take more swings and just try to get on base.

The same can be said across any industry. We see it all the time with people wanting to buy real estate. They get caught up waiting for that “perfect” deal or the “perfect” house. Truth is, they’re never seeing the perfect deal. They aren’t known for taking swings and getting on base. Agents want deals to close. They send the best deals to the people they know will swing.
You can strike out by watching pitches go by. Don’t strike out in life by watching opportunities go past you. We’re not saying to start swinging at junk….but you need to start swinging.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT
Perfection doesn’t exist. Stop trying to chase it. Put your work and your ideas out there. Learn from them. Be proud of them. Use the learnings to make the next thing that much better. Perfection is the enemy of good. Don’t let it hold you back from being great.
