The Level Up Letter - Vol. 42 - If It Bleeds, It Leads

Curating for the positive

THE LEVEL UP LETTER

Hi All!
Here is your weekly Level Up Letter. In news, there is the saying, “if it bleeds it leads.” It’s attributed to William Randolph Hearst after he noticed that the stories involving horrific incidents were the ones that caught the public’s attention.

Being mid-election cycle, the news and headlines are more divisive than ever. This week we wanted to give you a few tips and tricks to help protect yourself from all the fear stoking headlines and help combat your algorithms. We hope you enjoy!!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

CURATE THE POSITIVE

⁣There are plenty of things hitting the news and your feeds that make you think the world is ending. Luckily, there’s PLENTY of data to prove the opposite on a large scale. We always find it’s great to have good news and exciting new ideas hit our feeds so we wanted to share five of our favorite follows. If you’ve got more to share shoot them our way!

Freethink - Freethink is reimagining the news to share inspiring stories. They showcase the biggest ideas, the smartest people and most ground breaking technology from around the world.

That Good News Girl - Jen shares a Good News story every day. Lots of lovely posts about animals but she also shares feel-good stories that are community and business based. Like a Japanese restaurant who’s staff all have dementia where 40% of the orders are wrong but they have a 99% satisfaction rate from their customers.

Cleo Abram - Cleo shares optimistic stories on science and technology. If you want to know how Harvard scientists created the most detailed map of the brain, the 10yrs of R&D that went into Meta Glasses or how an ion engine works. Give her a follow.

Kate Mackz - Kate does a running interview show. She interviews all sorts of people while doing something healthy, running. We’ve watched her channel grow over the years and love the positivity she shares.

Good News Movement - GOOD NEWS ONLY page by journalist Michelle Figueroa. There’s absolutely no politics on this page. Only current good news stories.

PUT IT ON MUTE

If you want to clean up your feed…. Use that mute button. Chances are you know who you’re voting for and social media isn’t exactly the most diplomatic political atmosphere. Time to mute ALL the candidates. Tired of dumb trends? Add it to the mute list. Tired of someone’s stories but don’t want to unfollow them. Mute, mute, mute, mute, mute.

DIVIDE YOUR CHANNELS

Ideally, we’re spending less time scrolling through social media but that doesn’t mean it’s entirely useless. We’ve found that dividing how we curate each of our social channels makes it more useful.

I personally deleted 99% of my friends and family from Twitter and it’s solely Real Estate and Business focused. I’ve made connections with A Players in the space through comments and DMs that I otherwise would have no access to.

IG is more for day to day business and hobbies. (climbing, music, coaching etc)

Facebook - I never really scroll my FB feed anymore but it’s great for groups. I belong to Mobile Home Park Owners, Short Term Rental Owners and Storage Unit Groups that provide tons of value…and deal opportunites. Plus, FB Marketplace is unrivaled for buying used stuff.

Whatever channels you’re using, how can you curate them into specific use cases?

READY TO SPEND LESS TIME ON THE SOCIALS?

We still have an affiliate deal with the team at Brick. It’s the best social media blocker we’ve ever used. Since it’s hardware based you can’t just click through and get back on your feed. Check it out and use code BBMBRICK to get 10% off
